Letter of Invitation (VISA)

Who:
Florida residents (U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or individuals with legal immigration status) who want to invite family members or friends from abroad to visit the United States.

What:
A Letter of Invitation — a formal letter addressed to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate that provides details about the inviter, the invitee, and the purpose of the visit. The letter typically includes relationship information, dates of travel, duration of stay, and assurances regarding accommodations or support during the visit.

When:
Needed during the visitor visa (B-2) application process, typically submitted along with the visa application and supporting documents before the interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Where:
The letter is presented at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad where the invited guest is applying for their visa. The original may also be carried by the traveler when entering the U.S. to show Customs & Border Protection if requested.

Why:

  • To strengthen a visitor visa application by showing a clear purpose and support for the visit
  • To demonstrate ties to a U.S. resident, which can help immigration officials evaluate the legitimacy of the trip
  • To reduce the chance of delays or denials by ensuring the letter is professionally worded and includes all required details
